Ypres Surrey Highland dancers

Highland dancers in Ypres

Training for our Highland dancers normally lasts one year. During the training period there are no official performances, although a small performance may occasionally take place.

For rehearsals, we ask students to wear shorts or a skirt (above the knees) and long socks, together with a comfortable T-shirt. It is best to also bring a sweater and long trousers. Sometimes the temperature can vary so much that it is advisable to have a sweater and trousers with you. This helps us reduce the risk of illness (warm–cold).

Lessons take place on Tuesday evenings between 6:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. (From March onwards, two classes are active: the first class from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., the second class from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.).

We are pleased to welcome Linda Boonen as our new instructor. Not only does she teach Scottish dance, but she is also still active herself as a Highland dancer.

Our lessons are free of charge, but for insurance purposes we ask for a small annual contribution. When a dancer has sufficiently progressed in training, he or she may participate in performances.

Because the lessons are free, we ask dancers to take part in as many performances as possible.

Lessons are normally on Tuesdays, but occasionally a lesson may be moved to Thursday. Thursday is the YSPD band rehearsal day, when the pipers and drummers practice together. Group spirit is an important factor in the band. Since the dancers have their lessons on Tuesday, it is difficult for them to experience the band atmosphere. To help with this, we give the Highland dancers the opportunity to practice their dance steps in this setting as well.

Highland dancers after 1 year of training

The band provides the purchase of tailor-made clothing, all for the first official performance. What is asked is that the dancers buy their own shoes and socks after completing one year of training.

This means:

  • Dance pumps (soft leather shoes usually worn indoors): approx. €50
  • Split sole shoes (shoes worn when performing outdoors): approx. €50
  • Highland dance hoses, green tartan (socks, made to measure): approx. €125

Most items purchased by the band come from the online shop Kilts & More. However, before buying anything, it is recommended to first consult our dance committee or equipment manager.

These are, of course, not immediate costs.
