Uniform dresscode

Uniform dresscode: Military Dress Code

Our band possesses a No. 1 uniform, assembled according to the guidelines in the manual mentioned above.

Traditionally, the clothing of the Drum Major corresponds to that of the drummers, with the exception of the plaid. The Pipe Major, on the other hand, wears the same clothing as the pipers.

Both Pipe Major and Drum Major are graduates and have leadership over the band. They can be assisted by “Sergeants and Corporals.” The “stripes” are visible on the right sleeve of the doublet (jacket). On the right sleeve one can also see whether the player is a piper or a drummer, indicated by a badge with either a pipe or a drum. For the Pipe and Drum Major, this badge is further adorned with a laurel wreath.

This clothing is distinguished from others by its striking elements: the plaid (long for pipers) worn over the left shoulder, a ceremonial jacket (doublet), a piper’s belt over the right shoulder, and a white belt for Drum Major and drummers. Ribbons are placed between the drones of the pipes, and the drums are decorated with cords.

A long-hair sporran is worn, which automatically requires checkered hose with white spats over the shoes.

A glengarry is the standard headgear, while in the No. 1A dress a feather bonnet may be worn.

Additionally, the Drum Major may wear a “Baldric.”

Uniform dresscode: Semi-Military

Semi-Military dress is a combination of the previous two clothing types. In summary, above the kilt the clothing corresponds to the No. 2b dress, while on and below the kilt it corresponds to the No. 1A dress.

Uniform dresscode: Day Dress

As the name suggests, this is the most commonly worn outfit. It consists of a glengarry, a white or black shirt with a dark green tie. A black waistcoat and jacket complete the upper part of the outfit above the kilt.

On the kilt a black belt is worn, together with a day sporran (normally black for YSPD).

The hose can be either white or dark green. The shoes are brogues, traditional Scottish footwear.

No stripes are found on the jacket; these only appear on the No. 1A dress.

Highland Dancers’ Uniform Dress Code

The kilt of the dancers, drummers, and pipers is made in Scotland. Most of the clothing items such as hose, shoes, glengarry, etc. are often ordered via the online shop Kilts & More.
